Where is it?
The wool town of Clare is set deep in the Suffolk countryside, situated on the A1092 between the A604 and A134, it’s 8 miles from both Sudbury and Haverhill. A popular tourist destination due to its fascinating history, antique outlets and independent cafes and pubs. In March this year both The Sunday Times and Zoopla placed Clare amongst the Top 50 UK rural locations, having “period properties and rich history without the chocolate-box perfection – and the coach trips”.
A brief history
Clare has a fascinating history with the stone keep ruins of Clare Castle dating back to William the Conqueror, a 13th century Augustinian Priory and a Mediaeval Town Church.
The Romans, Angles, Saxons and Normans all played their part in the interesting history and creation of the heritage of the Clare we have today. It was a border fortress town between the kingdom of the East Angles and the Saxons. Referred to in the Domesday Book as a settlement of 600, with extensive vineyards. Over the years Clare has grown to the picture-perfect market town it is today, attracting visitors from all corners of the world.
